Bocce is one of the Special Olympics' newer sports and was first introduced at the World Games in 1991. Bocce is offered in over 33 countries worldwide. The Wisconsin Bocce Program offers team competition placing athletes in divisions according to ability. Bocce is a game of skill and strategy. There may be two, four or eight players on a team. Each player is given two balls and takes a turn rolling the ball toward the smallest ball (pallina), which has already been thrown onto the field. The players are given points for the balls thrown closest to the pallina. Players may also throw on the fly, striking the ball to move the pallina. Other players can displace the balls (including the pallina).
Special Olympics Bocce follows the Unified Sports model that combines athletes with and without cognitive disabilities onto one team. This model lets brothers and sisters as well as peers compete with their family member, schoolmate, and/or friend with a cognitive disability.
