Basketball "bounced" its way into competition at the 1968 Special Olympics World Games and has grown to include over 69,000 athletes from the US Program and 40 countries. As one of the world's most popular sports, Basketball is a favorite among athletes. Special Olympics Basketball teaches teamwork and skills of the game.
Basketball teams are grouped in divisions according to the athletes' ability level. Athletes can also compete in individual skills contests. These events are designed for the lower ability athletes.
Special Olympics Basketball follows the Unified Sports model that combines athletes with and without cognitive disabilities onto one team. This allows brothers and sisters as well as peers to compete with their family member, schoolmate, and/or friend with a cognitive disability.
